Meet the Aster & Fern team
KAREN BEDDOW AND RACHEL SOUTHERN
Aster & Fern is a social media and content marketing consultancy with a difference. Prior to creating businesses of their own within the social media arena, the team behind Aster & Fern achieved professional success working in the fields of Law and Communications.
This unusual combination of careers means that not only have Karen and Rachel built online businesses from scratch and honed their skills through practical application, they were able to do so in light of years of commercial experience.
Whilst Aster & Fern offers introductory social media courses, it is the one to one coaching and strategic advice that stands out and affords clients something different. The team is committed to finding the right approach for each individual business that they work with and increasing their digital presence through authentic communication, creative storytelling and intelligent campaigns.
Karen has an eclectic mix of skills. As well as being a founder of Aster & Fern, Karen runs the award winning family travel blog Mini Travellers. She is also a Trustee, Lawyer and Board Member all of which add to her very varied skill set.
Karen left her full time role as a commercial litigation solicitor when her three children were 6 and 5 (twins) to concentrate on her family travel blog Mini Travellers and to try and create a more flexible lifestyle for her and her family.
Karen has used her skills developed over 15 years in a professional environment to create and then turn Mini Travellers into an established business, but a business that means she can work from home and spend more time with her three children.
Karen also works on a consultancy basis for a law firm Ortolan Legal providing litigation advice to clients and sits on a CIC and a Housing Association Board. She is confident that most women have significant skills they have learnt in professional careers that can be adapted and flexed to suit a new business or career, they just need to work out what they are.
Co-founder of Aster & Fern and former finance analyst and communications manager for one of the world’s largest automotive companies, Rachel specialises in turning complex topics in to compelling narratives.
It doesn’t have to be about earnings results, engines and exhausts though, as evidenced by Rachel’s multi award winning lifestyle and interiors blog, The Ordinary Lovely.
Her ability to craft engaging stories and take beautiful photographs has seen her listed as one of the top 10 UK interiors bloggers by The Telegraph and receive a Pinterest UK Interiors Award for Best Imaginative Idea.
Rachel’s passion is working with small businesses to find their voice online and giving them the tools to tell their story and reach their audience in a creative and engaging way.
Despite regularly featuring in print and online publications, Rachel is much happier behind the scenes helping others to increase their online presence and achieve their goals.
